Welcome to our first newsletter of 2021. As you will no doubt be aware it is nearly Easter weekend already, so just a reminder that we will be closed on Good Friday the 2nd April and Easter Monday the 5th April, re-opening on the 6th April.
Could you please bring your child’s report comments sheets back and pass them to your child’s keyworker if you have not already done so she can file them with your child’s tracking.
May we ask that you send a change of clothes in for when your child plays in the water or outside. They do enjoy rolling around on the grass which is sometimes wet because of all the rain and when they play in the water it often seems to splash them!
Can we remind all parents that should your child need Calpol before their session it does wear off by lunch time and we end up with a very unhappy little child. So, if a child needs to have Calpol then maybe they should not be in nursery as they must be feeling poorly and will be much more comfortable at home and get themselves better.
Having just completed our paediatric first aid certificate. We are all once again acutely aware of how quickly a child can choke on food. One of these foods is grapes, because of their size and shape they can completely plug a child’s airway. and the tight seal produced by the grape’s smooth surface makes them difficult to dislodge with standard first aid techniques. Young children are particularly vulnerable to choking on grapes and they are the third most common cause of death in food related incidents because:
This is why we recommend that if you send your child into nursery with grapes then the grapes should be chopped in half lengthways and ideally in quarters.
I would just like to advise everyone that all staff and myself have had our first Covid-19 injection and are waiting for our second dose. We are also following the DfE Lateral Flow Testing programme and will be doing twice weekly LF tests to ensure good covid-19 health and safety measure.
We will be once again be supporting children’s communication and language with a range of listening activities, recognising sounds and linking sounds and sound songs. To support home learning of phonic sounds there will be a number of jolly phonics sound song CD’s available for parents to take free of charge. If you have any questions at all about phonics please feel free to ask
I have also made a range of adult and children’s face masks which are available in the hall for you to take free of charge.
During April we will be reading:
‘Monkey Tricks’ a story about a monkey who keeps playing tricks on his friends, but his friends don’t like his tricks and have a surprise for monkey, who then learns it is better to play nicely
‘Sometimes I feel sunny’ a story about four friends as they share a range of emotions
‘Don’t eat the teacher’ a story about a shark starting school who bites every time he gets excited.
‘Hippobottymus’ a lovely rhyming story about the bubbling creek in the jungle. What made the creek bubble wonder all the animals.
During activities we have noticed that although the preschool children are confidently counting numbers, some of them still struggle to recognise numbers out of context with certainty so we will be focusing on recognition of number to 10 and beyond.
For the nursery children we will be rote counting firstly 1-5 then 6-10 and for all of the children pencil control, with the preschool children beginning to colour carefully and draw representations of their experiences.
Songs for the Month
As well as our familiar songs that the children know and love we will be introducing four new songs:
Five little speckled frogs. This song encourages the children to start to count down from five to zero
What’s the weather (sung to the tune of Clementine) this is an action song which will also encourage the children to discuss the weather
We are also introducing the children to their first percussion instrument which are rhythm sticks. Playing rhythm sticks helps develop the children’s:
All of these areas promote the ethos of development within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
The songs that we will use along with rhythm sticks are:
Let’s all tap our sticks (played and sung to the tune of here we go round the Mulberry Bush)
Tap your sticks in the air (played and sung to the tune of if your happy and you know it)
Both of these songs will encourage the children to tap the sticks loudly, quietly, fast and slow and on different body parts
I just want to thank everyone (especially my staff) for their continuing support over the last year. It has been a difficult year following Covid-19 restrictions and with your help we have managed to remain safe.
As parents you have informed us on a regular basis if you are isolating because of contact with a confirmed case, you maintain social distancing when dropping off and collecting and are maintaining these good practices.
It has been a long journey for us all and one which we are now hopefully beginning to see a glimmer of hope for the return to normality.
